Type Study - Island of Lost Souls (Barrel Aged Copra Cacao)

In 2015 Jon made a stout called Copra Cacao "is an Imperial Stout aged in cocoa nibs & lots of toasted coconut." I believe this went through a few batches before being renamed to "Barrel Aged Island of Lost Souls..."

The first Untappd check in was on 2015.06.08. The first with a bottle image was on 2016.01.24:

The same hand-drawn label (I believe provided by Jon's daughter Tori) was used until 2017.06.17 when it was updated to something a bit less whimsical.Image with no description

I'd imagine that this beer went through several batches like the previous Touch of Death, with Jon making small adjustments to improve the beer and process. Sometime in 2019 the label and name changed to Island of Lost Souls (I suspect when the original Copra Cacao completed barrel aging) - this image is from a 2019.10.25 Untappd check in:

It reuses the previous artwork with a new name, the bottles are adorned with orange wax (at least at this time). There may be examples with different wax (this appears dark, maybe black, but all other images I've seen had the orange wax).

Post brewery open (2021.05.12) Jon doesn't release batches of Island of Lost Souls until the official release (on tap and in bottles) on 2022.12.23 accompanied by Escape from Planet Doom. At this point the beer gets an updated label with text overlay and white wax.

The next release was on 2024.11.27 along with Burn All the Witches - this reused the same label but changed the wax color to peacock blue to identify the Cruzan Rum barrel used in aging:

"Aged in a Cruzan Rum barrel for 15 months before being drawn from its wooden cask to soak in mounds of toasted flaked coconut and cocoa nibs. The barrel lends tastes of burnt sugar giving creme brûlée vibes along with brownies, and coconut."

Jon re-released Island of Lost Souls on 2025.09.12 with Season of Sludge. The bottle has the same label but now with a silver wax.

" "Island Of Lost Souls," a 12% Barrel-Aged Stout, and provides tasting notes and details about its production:

  • It's a returning, decadent stout that is richer and bolder than previous versions.
  • It's aged in a blend of (Cruzan?) Rum, Buffalo Trace, and Elijah Craig barrels.
  • The stout is layered with chocolate and raw coconut, resulting in a flavor likened to a "liquid Mounds bar in a glass".

It's described as smooth, luscious, and dangerously drinkable.
